As many of you know we are working an a very rare 41 Chevy Sedan Delivery.  Here are a few pictures of how it looked when it arrived here.

We then removed all the trim, glass, wiring, doors and other parts to prepare all paintable parts for sandblasting.

Now we come to the technical part. For the firewall and floors we chose Direct Sheetmetal's street rod kit. This kit is not intended to be used with the stock frame mounts. (They won't tell you this until you get the kit) Here at Weber Body Works we rarely follow the directions anyway. We decided to make this kit work with the stock frame mounts and braces. We would not recommend this for the faint of heart. We are professionals, please do not try this at home.

First we installed the firewall as per Direct Sheetmetal's instructions, but did not weld in just yet. We held it in place with Clecos.

Next step for those wanting to make this kit work with the stock frame mount brackets. Throw the floor and toe-kick instructions away, burn them if you want, and follow these easy to read directions.

In order to make the Direct Sheetmetal toe kick and floor kit work you will need to first modify the two toe kicks and one of the tunnel pieces. For this task you will  need access to a sheet metal bending brake capable of bending 16 gauge metal.   You will also need an air or electric powered "cut off wheel" tool.

We won't be cutting or bending today; just showing with the following pictures you why this kit will not work with the stock frame braces and mounts.

These first four pictures show what the trouble is with using this Direct Sheetmetal kit as shipped
when the stock frame mount brackets are being used. The techs at Direct Sheetmetal recommend you remove the stock frame mount brackets and put their floor (with spacers) directly on the frame. We at Weber Body Works would never recommend you do this,  this, well unless structural integrity is of no concern to you.

These last three pictures show what needs to be done to make this Direct Sheetmetal kit work.

Before Emmitt Smith became Lincoln Motor Company’s brand ambassador, he purchased a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300SL hard top convertible to celebrate signing on with the Dallas Cowboys. We are all familiar with Smith’s illustrious football career – three Super Bowl championships, NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards in 15 seasons, the only player to have won a Super Bowl MVP, NFL MVP, and NFL Rushing Crown in the same season, and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010. But what became of that historic convertible that was purchased proudly during Smith’s rookie year with the Cowboys?
Well, it eventually came into the hands of Richard Rawlings, owner of Gas Monkey Garage and host ofFast N’ Loud on the Discovery Channel. We spoke with Richard over the weekend and admittedly, the Mercedes has seen better days. The interior needs some attention and it has a few cosmetic flaws. With the speedometer stopped at 182,148 miles the true mileage isn’t known. Plus the tachometer and fuel gauge are not working.
Overall, the 300SL is in good condition and it runs solid as a German Leopard tank. As an added bonus, the winning bidder has the option of appearing on Fast N’ Loud when he or she takes delivery of the car. Even after leaving Smith’s hands, the car continues to be in the spotlight.
